Any program must be able to execute its code and write to memory in order to reproduce. Since no one would knowingly run a virus program, the virus chooses an easy method to accomplish its purpose. The virus inserts its code behind the executable files of programs that users run regularly (such as writing software). When a user executes the executable file, the virus program is also activated.

Based on the type of work, viruses are divided into two categories. After a virus becomes active, it looks for other programs to infect. It then passes them on and finally passes control to the parent program to deactivate. These are called non-resident viruses. On the other hand, some viruses remain in memory after activation. Whenever another program is launched, it infects that program. Such viruses are called resident viruses
